What is an Old European Cut Diamond?
When looking at antique or vintage pieces, you may come across the term “Old European Cut.” This is a style of which the diamond is cut and is a mark of a true vintage piece. The Old European Cut is the predecessor of the Modern Round Brilliant Cut and was cut by hand between 1890-1930. What makes a European Cut different than a Modern Cut? Let’s take a look at a few characteristics:

The Table
The very top of the diamond is called the “table.” An OEC will have a smaller table in comparison to modern cuts that have a very wide table.
The Crown
The top half of a diamond is referred to as the “crown.” A modern cut will have a short crown height, while an OEC will have a tall crown.

The Girdle
Between the top and bottom half of the diamond lies the “girdle.” An OEC’s girdle will have a frosted appearance. The girdle on a modern cut will be polished.
The Cutlet
The very bottom of the diamond is called the “cutlet.” This is where modern cuts have what looks like a point due to how small the cutlet is. In contrast, an OEC has a larger cutlet that creates a flat bottom. You can actually set an EOC diamond down and it will often stay in an upright position because of it!
